Latest Ofcom Rules Allow For Product Placement

Ofcom announced in February that product placement will be allowed in UK television programmes for the first time, which spells out good news for Channel 2020.

Product placement is the paid-for insertion of products, services, and trade marks into TV shows.  The new Ofcom rules are a major breakthrough to the way television programmes can now advertise. The ability to showcase a product – providing the programme follows the correct Ofcom rules – means it will now be easier to obtain advertising funding. By allowing more revenue streams for the funding of programming, production companies will inevitably find it less difficult to raise programme budgets.

In the US, product placement is estimated to be worth £2bn, with major programmes signing deals with brands such as Coca-Cola and Subway to show their products. It’s no wonder Ofcom have finally realised the potential of product placement.
